Starting July 1, 2025, Florida drivers face a major shift in how the law treats extreme speeding. The state’s new “Super Speeder” law is now in effect, and it’s changing the landscape of traffic enforcement. What was once considered a hefty but manageable ticket can now lead to serious criminal charges, jail time, and long-term consequences that follow you well beyond the highway.
The goal of this law is simple: to save lives. Florida lawmakers and safety advocates have long pointed to speeding as one of the leading contributors to fatal crashes. In fact, speeding plays a role in thousands of traffic deaths every year, and when drivers hit speeds that push 100 miles per hour or more, the risk becomes catastrophic. This law is Florida’s response to that growing danger.
Under the new rules, drivers caught going 50 miles per hour or more over the posted speed limit, or those clocked at speeds over 100 miles per hour in a way that endangers others, are no longer just looking at a fine. These are now criminal offenses. That means if you’re pulled over under these circumstances, you will be required to appear in court. You can’t simply mail in a check or pay online like with a traditional speeding ticket. Judges now have the power to impose jail time, significant fines, and even suspend your license on the first offense.
For a first-time violation, a driver could face up to 30 days in jail, a fine of up to $500, or both. A second offense within five years could land someone in jail for up to 90 days, result in a $1,000 fine, and trigger a license suspension of at least six months.
So, if you are pulled over, govern yourself within these guidelines. Stay calm, pull over safely, and keep your hands on the wheel. You don’t want to arouse suspicion that you have a concealed weapon. If you are carrying a gun, make sure to inform the officer right away. If you wish to record the event on your phone, tell the officer you would like to do so before reaching for anything. Speak respectfully and say as little as possible. Anything you say can be held against you and is likely being recorded on a bodycam. When asked, hand over your license, registration, and proof of insurance, but don’t admit guilt or engage in unnecessary conversation. If asked to consent to a search, politely say: “I do not consent to any searches.”
Keep in mind that Florida passed the “Halo Law” this year that makes it a second-degree misdemeanor to approach officers within 25 feet after being told to stop or back away. Therefore, if stopped by the police, don’t encourage others to help or film within close range as it will only aggravate the situation.
If arrested, invoke your right to a lawyer and stay silent.
