Zika in South Florida
Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the release of genetically engineered mosquitoes in Florida and the state is looking to an experimental study by a British company called Oxitec. The Florida Keys Mosquito Control District, in collaboration with Oxitec, will begin field trials to release genetically modified Aedes aegypti mosquitoes as part of an effort to combat the spread of the mosquito-borne Zika virus. The mosquitoes are altered so their offspring die before they are able to reproduce.
Local Schools Are Addressing Zika
Miami Dade County School Board Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, according to an article in the Miami Herald, “said the district plans to maintain its ban on bringing mosquito repellent to school, in case students are allergic to the spray. Instead, Miami-Dade is encouraging the “aggressive application” of insect repellent at home before school.” Be conscious of your own community’s health advisories for details and stay safe.
Additional Safety Tips For The Upcoming School Year
With the new school year starting up next week, we want to also remind you about school travel safety. The first week of school is hectic for children, parents and drivers that are trying to get to work before rush hour. Whether your kids take a bus, walk or travel by bicycle, the first week is a learning experience for everyone. The drivers that are used to summer vacation with no ‘slow- school zone’ suddenly need to be alert for school crossings, school buses with the stop sign arm, and an increase in children on sidewalks and at intersections.
Drivers are reminded to follow the speed limit and slow down in school zones and near bus stops. Stay alert and look for children who may not be paying attention to traffic to catch a school bus or cross the road.
